Masterplan Korte Groeneweg

Together with Fallow and Arcadis, PLUSOFFICE developed a masterplan for the area around Trassersweg and Petit Chemin Vert in Brussels through design-based research and environmental analysis. Anyone who enters Petit Chemin Vert discovers a well-kept secret full of qualities and dynamics, which served as the starting point for the development of the masterplan.

The area was spared during successive waves of development in the region, but each transformation left its mark. Today, the site presents itself as a convergence of different landscapes from different eras. This diversity brings with it a tremendous richness. We set the ambition to preserve and strengthen this simultaneity and layering, while at the same time transforming the area into a more coherent and legible whole. To achieve this, we based our approach on the analysis of the three most striking landscapes: a productive landscape stretching from the fields to the canal, a green-blue landscape, and a recreational and inhabited landscape.

How can we ensure that this unique place with its often delicate balance can retain its mystery while also sharing its qualities within the dynamics of a transforming metropolis? This site contains one of the best soils in Brussels and is part of one of the region’s few large open landscapes. It is our collective responsibility to manage this resource thoughtfully.

The design research drew on these ambitions to develop three different scenarios, each emphasizing a characteristic aspect of the sub-landscapes, which were then merged into a preferred vision for the masterplan. Throughout the entire process, participatory moments were organized with the residents of Heembeek. During the Petit Safari Vert, residents rediscovered their neighborhood via a guided walk with various stops, where local partners explained the site’s qualities and challenges. During the Atelier Vert, residents discussed the choices made for the preferred scenario together.
