Masterplan for Brussels North Station
Ongoing transformations in Brussels’ North District have highlighted the need for an overarching strategy for the public space framework and the intermodal mobility hub around North Station. To better align the connections between train, tram, metro, bicycle, and various bus operators, the team PLUSOFFICE, Basil Descheemaeker & Arcadis developed a three-dimensional master plan that organizes the different flows in a clearer and more legible way. This has a direct impact on the public space framework and how it can facilitate the real estate redevelopment of various office towers and the CCN building.
Amid the complex web of visions, permitting processes for real estate projects, and infrastructure challenges, a shared vision was developed through design-driven research. Diverse interests commuters, cyclists, neighborhood residents, the ground conditions, water permanently pumped from the metro tunnels, operational services of the Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB), etc. were brought together in co-creation workshops. This resulted in a clear and coherent plan for the public space, focused on three key themes: climate-resilient design, optimization of intermodal flows, and inclusive public space.
The master plan for North Station sets a new and shared direction to transform the district and rethink its functionality, for the benefit of current and future users. This includes redeveloping the intermodal hub to be as efficient as possible and anticipating the arrival of new functions, including the creation of housing for a diverse population.
